Discover the hidden gems of St. Simons Island with our must-see guide! Uncover six activities and attractions that make this coastal paradise unforgettable.
St. Simons Island is a hidden gem nestled on Georgia’s beautiful coastline. The island offers a perfect blend of history, breathtaking nature, and family-friendly activities. With its charming atmosphere and stunning natural beauty, this picturesque island is an ideal destination for a memorable vacation with your little ones.
Last weekend we went to the beautiful St Simons Island for the first time. The island neighbors Jekyll Island in the Golden Isles. We had an amazing time, but with only 2 days on the island we had to try to squeeze in everything that the island has to offer. Although it’s an island, it’s bigger than you may think and there are so many outdoor activities and things to do! It was our first time visiting St. Simons Island and we stayed at the amazing King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort. The staff was amazing and had some great suggestions on things we should do while we were in town. Here’s a short list of things to do in St. Simons Island the next time you visit with your family.
6 Things to Do In St. Simons Island
1. Write Your Name in the sand on the beach
Something as simple as writing your names on the beach can bring you so much joy. East Beach is one of the most popular beaches in St. Simons Island. It tends to be a huge hit with families. Your kids can build sandcastles, collect seashells, and splash around in the waves. You can even set up a picnic and play a few outdoor games. East Beach guarantees a day filled with fun, relaxation, and beautiful coastal views. This is one of our favorite things to do in St. Simons Island. We could honestly spend hours at the beach.
2. Visit Christ Episcopal Church
Christ Episcopal Church is a highly coveted sight to see in St. Simons Island. There is so much history that you literally get all the feels walking the grounds. You can take a self-guided tour around the property but only during certain times.
3. Go on a self guided tour at Fort Frederica
Fort Frederica is one site that you must visit during your trip to St. Simons Island, Georgia. Visiting Fort Frederica was one of our favorite things to do in St. Simons Island. I love history and sharing my love of learning with Tatiana so visiting the Fort was a must. There is so much history at the Fort too.
Fort Frederica is one of the oldest settlements in America, established in 1736 by General James Oglethorpe to protect Savannah and the Carolinas from Spain. During our stay at The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort, we got to visit the fort and it was nothing short of amazing. When we first arrived at Fort Frederica, we watched a short film about the history of old military outpost. It was very educational and helped to give insight on what we were about to see. The tour of the fort was self guided which was great. It allowed us to take our time walking the grounds and taking in all of the history. We were also able to take lots of pictures.
When we went to visit, we were the only ones on the property. It was nice to take the self-guided tour in peace and quiet. We weren’t rushed and were able to stroll at our own pace. You’re able to watch a short movie before you begin your tour that gives a little insight into what you’re actually touring.
Tatiana had so much fun navigating us through the old post using her map. I would definitely recommend Fort Frederica to anyone who is visiting the island. It’s a great place to give your kids a history lesson and spend a day with your family.
4. Take a tour of the St. Simons Island Lighthouse
We weren’t able to take a tour of the Lighthouse Museum because it was closed but we will definitely be heading there on our next trip back. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views of the island and its surroundings. The museum has exhibits and provides an educational experience for everyone.
5. Ride on the Trolley and take a tour of St. Simons Island
If you don’t have time to squeeze all of these things into your itinerary, the trolley tour is the one thing that is an absolute must! The trolley takes you through the entire island and you’ll get to see all of the sights at once.
6. Play with your kiddies at Neptune Park
Neptune Park is a favorite for tourists and locals alike. Tatiana really enjoyed playing at the park. It’s close to the pier so you can take a stroll there too while you’re at it.
